Our team at Compress and & Shock is deeply passionate about CPR and AED education. We have no employees and all Board members and Physician Champions are giving their time and expertise voluntarily because we uniformly believe that there should be no barriers to learning the skills to save a fellow person’s life.

Jack Perkins, Md

Executive Director

Dr. Jack Perkins is board-certified in both Emergency and Internal Medicine and currently is a faculty physician with the Virginia Tech Carilion Emergency Medicine Residency. He is an educator, spending most of his professional life teaching in the Emergency Department, at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, and nationally as a lecturer for the American College of Emergency Physicians. He has a vision to deliver CPR and AED education to all and consequently founded the Compress and Shock Foundation in 2017 as a means to achieve that goal. An avid CrossFitter since 2010, Dr. Perkins found it most appropriate to merge two of his passions by engaging the fitness community.


Tamalyn Tanis

Director of Community Engagement

Tamalyn Tanis is the current co-owner of Roanoke Valley CrossFit.  She is a Level One certified coach as well as the CrossFit Kids trainer.  Tamalyn was an area high school volleyball coach for 22 years before retiring in 2016 in order to spend more time with her husband Mark and daughter Avery. She and Mark co-direct the annual Shamrock Festival Volleyball Tournament, which is largest travel sporting event in the Roanoke Valley. As an advocate of a healthy and active lifestyle, Tamalyn is honored to be a part of the Compress and Shock Foundation and hopes to utilize the CrossFit community to help springboard Jack’s CPR and AED educational goals.

Karen Perkins, MD

Vice Director and Director of Fundraising

Dr. Karen Perkins is board-certified in Family Medicine and currently is a faculty physician with the Virginia Tech Carilion Family Medicine Residency.  She is a clinician and educator, spending most of her professional life teaching and seeing patients of all ages, including delivering babies.  After 4 years of having her own kids at an alarming pace, (now ages 7, 5, and 3), she recommitted to CrossFit in January 2016, and now can be found at Roanoke Valley CrossFit most days of the week.  Her CrossFit goal is to master her nemesis lift, the snatch, and enter a competition RX in 2018 partnering with her husband, Jack.


Andrew Bouland, MD

Director of Grant Development

Dr. Andrew Bouland is a resident emergency physician with the Virginia Tech Carilion Emergency Medicine Residency.  He is a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Medicine and a native of Laurel, MD.  Dr. Bouland has an extensive background in EMS including greater than 10 years as an EMS provider.  He has a particular interest in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and bystander CPR.  Previous initiatives by Andrew include launching a community CPR program through the Arnold P. Gold Foundation to teach compression-only CPR to the underserved in Baltimore City.  He has also worked on related research projects analyzing cost effectiveness of community CPR programs and barriers to bystander CPR.  In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Andrew is a current member of the Cave Spring Volunteer Rescue Squad in Roanoke County, Virginia.

Joe ‘Numbers’ Alesantrino

Director of Finance

Joe Alesantrino has spent his career in Accounting and Finance roles at various healthcare entities.  His experience includes financial leadership roles in an acute care and rehabilitation hospital, a hospital-based managed care organization and national and regional long term care operators.  Joe holds a MBA from Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. The Foundation’s mission in collaboration with healthy living attracted Joe to his role as Director of Finance.  He is a resident of Roanoke, VA where he resides with his wife Mary Lynn.  Joe and Mary Lynn have a combined family of five children.

Bob Zemple, MD

Board Member

Bob Zemple is currently practicing as both an Emergency Medicine (EM) and local Emergency Medical Services (EMS) physician with Aurora BayCare in Green Bay, WI.  He is avid sports enthusiast, enjoys running, and is both a member and works with the area's YMCAs.  He completed medical school in Madison, WI at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, then went on to Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, VA for EM residency followed by EMS Fellowship while concurrently earning his Professional MBA from Virginia Tech. Bob then returned back home with is family to the greater Green Bay area in the summer of 2017.

sammy zakaria, md

Board Member

Sammy Zakaria grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, studied at the Pennsylvania State University, and medical school at Jefferson Medical College.  He did his residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, then a cardiovascular disease fellowship and MPH at the University of Maryland.  Subsequently, he became a critical care medicine fellow at the UCSF before joining faculty at Johns Hopkins, where he predominately works in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at JHBMC and Cardiac Care Unit at Johns Hopkins Hospital.  In his role as the Assistant Director of the CICU at JHBMC, he is most interested in findings ways to improve ICU care while decreasing the stress experienced by patients, families, and staff.  He is honored to be a member of the Compress & Shock Foundation Board, with the laudable goal of reducing the number of patients that need him in the cardiac ICU!

Dr. Abraham completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Maryland Medical Center in 2008. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and serves as the Chairman of Emergency Medicine at University of MD - Upper Chesapeake Health System.  In his spare time he can be found running track repeats and lactate threshold intervals in an attempt to qualify for the Boston Marathon.


Sam hampton

Director of advertising

Sam is an Enterprise Business Leader and Digital Transformation Strategist valued for disrupting industry norms with world-class SaaS, web, mobile, and app solutions. Currently, Sam is the CEO and Founder of Tethr, a cloud based video collaboration platform linking remote users to experts. He  holds two degrees from Virginia Tech, and enjoys anything Hokie related, especially spending fall Saturdays in Lane Stadium.  He loves fly fishing, time outdoors, and found Crossfit with his wife at the age of 48.  He also has three kids and three dogs. Sam sits on the Advisory board for the Center of Business Intelligence and Analytics for the Pamplin School of Business at Virginia Tech.
